Topic: The “Get-Rich-Quick” Syndrome

Father, please open my understanding to recognise and avoid the dangers of the get-rich-quick syndrome.

Bible Passage: Jeremiah 17:7–11

7️⃣ Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose hope is in Him.

8️⃣ He shall be like a tree planted by the waters, spreading its roots by the river. It will not fear when heat comes; its leaves will remain green. Even in the year of drought it will not be anxious, nor will it stop bearing fruit.

9️⃣ The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can understand it?

🔟 I, the Lord, search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct and the fruit of their deeds.

1️⃣1️⃣ Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay, so is the one who gains wealth unjustly. Such riches will leave them in the middle of their life, and in the end they will be seen as fools.

Introduction 

God desires His children to live a comfortable and fulfilled life. From the beginning, He created everything necessary for humanity’s well-being, whether as finished products or raw materials for development (Genesis 1:20–22, 24–25; 2:8–9,16). The earth contains abundant resources meant for mankind (Ecclesiastes 5:9).

However, impatience and the desire for instant success have pushed many people—especially young individuals—to pursue wealth through dishonest or unethical means. This unhealthy desire is commonly known as the “get-rich-quick syndrome.”

This lesson examines the dangers of this mindset and provides biblical guidance on how believers can resist the temptation to pursue wealth through dishonest or impatient means.

Text Review: Jeremiah 17:7–11

a. This passage contrasts those who trust in human strength with those who trust in God. It warns against dishonest ways of acquiring wealth and encourages complete trust in God’s provision.

b. Trust in God:

Anyone who trusts in the Lord will be like a tree planted by water, continually nourished and fruitful (vv.7–8). 🌳

c. The Deceitful Heart:

The human heart can be deceptive and wicked, making people vulnerable to sinful desires (v.9).

d. Accountability:

God examines every heart and rewards each person according to their actions (v.10).

e. The Fate of Unjust Wealth:

Wealth obtained dishonestly will eventually be lost, and the person who acquires it will ultimately be exposed as foolish (v.11).

Answer:

It is an intense and often irrational desire to acquire wealth rapidly without patience, effort, or regard for moral and legal consequences.

Gambling

Ponzi schemes

Cybercrime (internet fraud)

Armed robbery

Kidnapping

Answer:

The consequences include:

Increased crime rates such as robbery, kidnapping, and murder

Decline in educational standards

Loss of moral values like honesty, diligence, and fairness

Sudden loss of ill-gotten wealth (Proverbs 23:4–5)

Lack of true satisfaction

Possible destruction or untimely death (Proverbs 1:18–19)

What warning signs should people watch for to avoid get-rich-quick scams?

Answer:

Some red flags include:

Promises of huge profits within a short time

Offers claiming “high returns with no risk”

Strangers presenting suspicious business opportunities

Requests to use your bank account for transactions

Lesson Outline 2: Resist the Urge

A. How Individuals Can Overcome the Desire for Quick Wealth

Believers can overcome this temptation by:

1️⃣ Trusting God as the source of wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18; Isaiah 48:17).

2️⃣ Evaluating their current situation and planning practical steps for improvement (Luke 15:17–19).

3️⃣ Remaining diligent and committed to their work (Proverbs 22:29).

4️⃣ Seeking wisdom, practicing patience, cultivating contentment, and maintaining integrity (Ecclesiastes 7:12; Hebrews 13:5; 1 Timothy 6:6).

B. The Role of Society

Society can also help combat this problem by:

1️⃣ Educating people about fraudulent schemes through media platforms such as social media, newspapers, and public awareness campaigns.

2️⃣ Promoting strong moral values that emphasise integrity over material success.

3️⃣ Avoiding the celebration of individuals who display wealth obtained through questionable means (Psalm 73:3; Proverbs 13:11).

4️⃣ Creating job opportunities, supporting entrepreneurship, and providing skill acquisition programmes for youths.

Conclusion 

The get-rich-quick syndrome promotes the desire to acquire wealth rapidly with little effort and without regard for the risks or consequences. Believers must be cautious and avoid such temptations, remembering that the love of money is the root of many evils (1 Timothy 6:10).

True prosperity comes through diligence, integrity, patience, and God’s blessing.

Evaluation

Teachers should ask the students to mention five illegal activities people engage in to become rich quickly.
