Topic: Understanding God’s Covenant With Noah

CENTRAL TRUTH

Noah’s obedience brought him into God’s covenant of preservation. The rainbow became the sign of God’s promise never to destroy the earth again with a flood, reminding us of His faithfulness through every storm of life.

BRIEF COMMENTARY

Covenant is one of the major themes of the Bible. It reveals God’s sacred relationship with humanity. The Hebrew word Berith means “to bind” or “to cut,” showing the seriousness and commitment involved in covenant relationships. Unlike ordinary agreements, biblical covenants carry spiritual responsibilities, especially when God is involved.

In Genesis 6:18, God established a covenant with Noah. He promised to preserve Noah, his family, and the animals from the coming flood. This covenant introduced a new beginning for humanity and displayed God’s mercy and faithfulness. God’s promise never again to destroy the earth with a flood demonstrates His enduring commitment to His creation.

The covenant with Noah also points forward to the greater covenant fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Just as God remained faithful to Noah, He remains faithful to us through Christ, offering salvation and eternal life. Noah’s story reminds believers that God never fails in keeping His promises.

INTRODUCTION

We thank God for His wonderful ways of communicating His will to humanity, especially as today is observed as World Telecommunication Day.

In our previous lesson, we learned more deeply about Creation and the Fall of Man. May God’s name be praised forever.

Today’s lesson, Understanding God’s Covenant With Noah, focuses on the biblical concept of covenant. Throughout Scripture, God established several important covenants, notably the Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and the Messianic (New) Covenant.

A covenant is more than a promise; it is a sacred relationship involving commitments and responsibilities between God and His people.

This lesson focuses on God’s covenant with Noah. Understanding these covenants is essential because they help unlock the deeper message of the Bible. May God grant us wisdom and understanding through His Word, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

LESSON EXPOSITION

I. UNIVERSAL FLOOD BEFORE THE COVENANT

(Genesis 6:1-22; 7:1ff)

“So the LORD said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth…’”

— Genesis 6:7

a) Genesis 6:1-12

Human wickedness increased greatly after the Fall, causing grief to God. However, Noah remained righteous and refused to follow the corrupt lifestyle of his generation.

b) Verses 13-22

Although God’s judgment was certain, He delayed destruction to give Noah time to prepare the ark for those willing to believe and obey Him.

c) Genesis 7:1ff

God sent the flood to judge sin and wickedness while preserving Noah, his family, and the animals inside the ark. This demonstrates both God’s justice and His mercy toward the righteous.

d) Lesson For Today

The world is still moving toward God’s judgment because of increasing wickedness. Believers must repent, remain watchful, and stay faithful to God.

e) Noah’s Obedience

Noah’s faith and obedience were crucial. Covenant relationships require complete obedience to God.

The flood story points beyond Noah to Jesus Christ, the true Deliverer who brings salvation and restoration.

a) Gratitude After Deliverance

After the flood, Noah offered sacrifices to God in thanksgiving for preservation and mercy.

b) Stages Of The Noahic Covenant

1. Before The Flood

“But I will establish My covenant with you…” (Genesis 6:18)

2. After The Flood

God accepted Noah’s sacrifice and promised mercy upon the earth.

3. Covenant Confirmation

God formally established His covenant with Noah and gave the rainbow as its sign.

c) God’s Promise

God promised never again to destroy the earth with a universal flood. The rainbow remains a symbol of His faithfulness and mercy.

d) Fulfilment In Christ

Every covenant in Scripture ultimately points to Jesus Christ and the New Covenant.

e) Warning Against Sin

Both the flood and Christ’s sacrifice reveal God’s hatred for sin and His coming judgment upon unrepentant sinners.

Those outside the ark perished, while those inside experienced safety through God’s covenant. In the same way, eternal safety is found only in Christ. Remain in the Lord, and you will be secure forever.

CONCLUSION

As we conclude Lesson 17, we thank God for His faithfulness and mercy. Through Noah’s story, we learn about God’s judgment, preservation, and covenant love. May we embrace the greater covenant found in Jesus Christ and walk daily in its fullness and blessings. Amen.
