MEMORY SCRIPTURE

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

— 2 Timothy 3:16

The inspiration of the Bible remains a divine mystery in which God’s voice worked through human hearts to produce an eternal guide for mankind.

BRIEF COMMENT

In 2 Timothy 3:16, Apostle Paul declares that all Scripture is divinely inspired—“God-breathed.” This affirms the Bible as a unique, authoritative source of truth. It is useful for teaching, correction, reproof, and training in righteousness, equipping believers for every good work.

This verse establishes the divine origin of the Bible. It is not merely a collection of human ideas, but the revelation of God communicated through the Holy Spirit. Because of this divine inspiration, the Bible remains authoritative, trustworthy, and sufficient for faith and Christian living. Believers are therefore called to obey its teachings and depend on the Holy Spirit for understanding and application.

Because Scripture is God’s own Word and not merely human thought, it must be read with reverence, obedience, and openness to its wisdom, correction, and encouragement.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM:

To help believers recognise the Bible as God’s inspired Word, understand its authority, and apply its truths to daily living and spiritual growth.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

i. Explain what it means that the Bible is inspired by God;

ii. Describe the authority of the Bible in teaching and daily living;

iii. Clearly state how biblical principles apply to everyday life.

INTRODUCTION

In the previous lesson, Divine Revelations That Shape the Bible, we examined how God revealed His truth to humanity. We thank God for the insights gained from that powerful lesson.

This week’s focus is The Inspiration of the Bible, a foundational doctrine of the Christian faith. The doctrine of inspiration affirms that Scripture is divinely inspired and authoritative in matters of faith and practice. While the Bible was written by human authors, God Himself is its ultimate Author, setting it apart from all other religious writings.

This lesson will explore how the Bible was inspired, its divine origin, and the authority it carries in the lives of believers. Understanding the inspiration of Scripture strengthens faith and deepens confidence in the unchanging truth of God’s Word. May the Holy Spirit transform us as we study, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

LESSON EXPOSITION

I. THE BIBLE: GOD’S INSPIRED WORD

(2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21)

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” — 2 Timothy 3:16

a) Inspiration means that God guided human writers through the Holy Spirit, ensuring that what they wrote faithfully communicated His truth (2 Tim. 3:16–17).

b) The Bible is both divine and human. God used people with different backgrounds, personalities, and writing styles, yet the message remained divinely directed (Ps. 119:105).

c) The phrase “given by inspiration of God” confirms that Scripture originates from God and carries divine authority, not human opinions or cultural ideas (Ps. 119:89).

d) Apart from the Ten Commandments written by God Himself (Exo. 31:18), all Scripture was written by men moved by the Holy Spirit, ensuring accuracy and reliability (2 Pet. 1:20–21).

e) Believers are therefore called to honour Scripture, study it diligently, and live by its teachings in order to grow in righteousness and fulfil God’s purpose.

II. THE AUTHORITY OF THE INSPIRED WORD

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law…” — Matthew 5:18

a) The authority of the Bible rests on its divine authorship. Jesus Himself affirmed the eternal validity of God’s Word (Matt. 5:18).

b) God’s Word is eternal and unchanging, established forever in heaven and superior to all human wisdom (Ps. 119:89; Isa. 40:8).

c) Jesus treated Scripture as authoritative and unbreakable, using it as the foundation for truth and obedience (Matt. 4:4; Jn. 10:35).

d) God’s Word is powerful and purposeful. It always accomplishes what God intends and never returns void (Isa. 55:10–11).

e) The Bible remains the ultimate standard for faith and conduct, guiding believers toward obedience, blessing, and spiritual maturity (James 1:22–25).

LIFE APPLICATION

A farmer once planned to cut down a fruitless tree at the centre of his farm. Though it provided shelter to birds, he saw no value in it. While cutting it down, he discovered a hidden honeycomb filled with honey and realised the tree’s true worth.

Likewise, Jesus stands at the centre of life’s message. Though often overlooked, He provides shelter, sweetness, and life itself. May we recognise His value and treasure Him above all else.

CONCLUSION

We thank God for bringing us to the end of Lesson Three. The Bible is divinely inspired, authoritative, and eternally relevant. Its truths lead to salvation, correction, and spiritual growth. Let us honour God’s Word by studying it, obeying it, and sharing it faithfully, knowing it is the ultimate guide for faith, life, and godliness.
