TOPIC: Managing Resources

SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN

Father, help me to be prudent in managing resources, in Jesus’ name.

BIBLE PASSAGE

Genesis 39:2–4

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

MEMORY VERSE

“Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.”

(Matthew 25:16)

INTRODUCTION

Resources are anything useful that adds value to life. These include air, water, minerals, plants, animals, and human beings (Genesis 1:29–30). In His mercy, God has endowed every society with both human and natural resources to enable productivity, survival, and prosperity (1 Kings 5:6).

Resources can be broadly classified into three categories: capital resources, natural resources, and human resources. This lesson focuses on how believers can effectively manage the resources God has entrusted to them.

LESSON AIM

To develop managerial skills in students.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: a. Define resources.

b. Explain how to manage resources effectively.

c. Describe how to manage people.

TEACHING PLAN

To achieve the stated objectives, the teacher should: a. Allow students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, participate in discussions, and engage in class activities and assignments.

b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to oversee the welfare of the class and mark attendance and assignments.

c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate, and assign homework.

TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 39:2–4

Joseph prospered in his master’s house because the LORD was with him. This divine presence earned him favour and responsibility.

LESSON OUTLINE

LESSON OUTLINE 1: MANAGING CAPITAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES

A. Accountability in Resource Management

Capital and natural resources entrusted to us must be properly accounted for (Genesis 31:38–40). This teaches us that:

Responsibility is required to ensure resources are fully maximised.

Resources must be carefully controlled and wisely utilised (Genesis 1:28–30).

Examples include: i. Money, as a capital resource, should be spent wisely and multiplied through investment (Luke 19:12–16).

ii. Wastage or abuse of resources is a sign of indiscipline and disservice to humanity (Proverbs 21:20; Luke 15:11–14).

B. Integrity in Resource Management

Managing resources demands a high level of integrity. Regardless of the quantity under our care, honesty is essential (1 Samuel 12:3). Therefore:

We must be diligent, careful, and productive with the resources within our influence (Genesis 30:29–30; Genesis 39:3).

We must remember that we are stewards and will give an account of every resource entrusted to us (Matthew 25:19).

Class Activity 1:

Mention practical ways to manage business capital effectively.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: MANAGING PEOPLE

A. Discovering and Maximising Human Potential

Every person is useful when properly discovered and appropriately engaged (Judges 11:7–8; Ephesians 3:7–8). Examples include:

The four lepers—though rejected—were used by God to bring relief to Israel during famine (2 Kings 7:8–9).

David’s mighty men—people once considered worthless were transformed into valiant warriors (1 Samuel 22:1–2; 1 Chronicles 11:10–11).

Peter—Jesus transformed a fearful disciple into a bold preacher of the gospel (Luke 22:55–61; Acts 2:14; Acts 4:13).

The people of Jerusalem—Nehemiah’s leadership inspired unity and productivity (Nehemiah 2:18; 4:17; 12:27).

B. Harnessing Talents and Gifts

Human beings are created with diverse gifts and abilities which must be discovered and optimally utilised.

Inspired people work willingly and effectively (Nehemiah 2:17–18).

Effective leaders identify strengths, encourage growth, and help people overcome weaknesses (Acts 18:24–26).

Class Activity 2:

Share an experience of the impact a good leader once had on your life.

CONCLUSION

Every resource is a divine gift entrusted to us. Proper management of these resources brings blessing not only to the steward but also to others.

EVALUATION

Mention the three groups of resources discussed in this lesson.

Lord, make me a good and faithful manager of resources, in Jesus’ name.

Students should identify five (5) ways people can be effectively managed.
