TOPIC: The Comfort of God

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

2 Corinthians 1:3–11

MESSAGE

I was impatient. My husband and I had just returned from the grocery store, and as we unpacked our bags, I suddenly realized something was missing—the donuts. I searched everywhere, then checked the receipt. No donuts. Frustrated, I blurted out, “All I wanted from the store was a donut!”

About fifteen minutes later, my husband walked in and handed me a bag of donuts. He had gone back out into the snow just to get them for me. I hugged him tightly and said with a shy smile, “I’m glad you didn’t get into an accident just to satisfy my craving!”

Normally, I wouldn’t get so upset over something so small. But it had been an emotionally exhausting week, and I was looking for comfort—even if it came in the form of a donut. What I received instead was something far deeper: the love and compassion of my husband.

Comfort that comes from satisfying cravings is temporary. True and lasting comfort, however, comes from the “God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). The apostle Paul knew this well. He endured intense hardships, persecutions, and trials for his faith. Yet God comforted him, enabling him to comfort others who were going through similar struggles (v. 4).

When we are overwhelmed or hurting, we can turn to Jesus, who overflows with compassion and comfort (v. 5). In Him, we find true peace. And once we have experienced His comfort, we are called to extend that same comfort to others.

REFLECT & PRAY

When have you experienced God’s comfort in difficult times? How can you share that comfort with someone facing a similar challenge?

Prayer:

God of all comfort, thank You for the peace and solace You give me in times of trouble. Help me to share that comfort with others who are hurting. Amen.

INSIGHT FOR TODAY

In 2 Corinthians 1:3–7, the word comfort appears repeatedly. The Greek word paraklēsis means “to come alongside to help.” Before His departure, Jesus used a related word, paraklētos, to describe the Holy Spirit—our Advocate, Helper, Comforter, and Counselor (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7). Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, believers experience God’s comforting presence and are empowered to bring that comfort to others.
