OPENING PRAYER

Father, please give us broken and contrite hearts that are fully surrendered to Your will at all times.

MEMORY VERSE

“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

LESSON INTRODUCTION

God places great value on a broken heart. Unlike humans who often discard broken things as useless, God treasures the broken and contrite heart. There is something about brokenness that attracts God’s presence, favour, and intervention.

When a believer is genuinely broken before God, such a person experiences divine honour, mercy, and answered prayers. God’s desire for all believers is not outward strength alone, but inward brokenness of heart, spirit, and self-will.

To help members understand the nature and characteristics of a broken Christian.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, members should be able to:

Understand what it means to be broken as a Christian

Identify the benefits of genuine brokenness.

TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 51:17

God accepts a broken spirit as a true sacrifice.

A broken and repentant heart will never be rejected by God.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE

QUALITIES OF A BROKEN CHRISTIAN

A broken Christian displays the following qualities:

a. Genuine Repentance

(Proverbs 28:13)

True repentance acknowledges wrongdoing and sincerely turns away from sin. David demonstrated this in Psalms 32 and 51.

b. Restitution

(Luke 19:1–8)

Where loss, damage, or injustice has occurred, apology alone is not enough. Restitution shows a sincere heart, just as Zacchaeus restored what he took.

c. A Forgiving Heart

(Ephesians 4:32; Matthew 18:23–35)

Broken believers forgive freely, without bitterness or a desire for revenge. God strongly opposes an unforgiving heart.

d. Enduring Wrong Without Retaliation

(1 Peter 2:19–23)

This reflects humility—suffering for righteousness without revenge. Believers are called to this Christ-like lifestyle.

e. Prompt and Complete Obedience

(Psalm 32:9)

A broken heart obeys God fully and willingly, not partially or reluctantly.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO

BENEFITS OF A BROKEN HEART

i. Broken people esteem others above themselves and are promoted by God because they serve selflessly.

ii. They receive divine direction that makes them productive and fruitful, as seen in Jacob’s experience with Laban.

iii. They rejoice in the success of others and learn from criticism, knowing all glory belongs to God.

iv. God draws near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

v. They enjoy divine preservation, protection, and security.

SUMMARY

A broken and repentant heart is a sacrifice God gladly accepts.

CONCLUSION

Brokenness produces true humility. Until pride is broken, genuine humility before God and people cannot be achieved.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY

Identify and work on any habits or attitudes that hinder your fruitfulness as a vessel in God’s hands.

PRAYER POINTS

Father, erase every evil record keeping me in bondage.

Father, walk with me until I fulfil Your divine purpose for my life.

Father, break and remould me until I become pleasing in Your sight.

Father, deny the enemy access to my family, church, and nation.

Father, strengthen Daddy and Mummy G.O. and reposition them for greater works as they grow in grace.

GOLDEN DIET FOR THE WEEK

Monday: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

Tuesday: God sustains the godly who are broken in heart (Psalm 37:17).

Wednesday: God heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds (Psalm 147:3).

Thursday: A lack of self-control leaves one vulnerable (Proverbs 25:28).

Friday: God provides comfort for the brokenhearted (Isaiah 61:1).

Saturday: Brokenness opens the door to divine revelation.

Sunday: The brokenhearted experience God’s victory in every battle.
