Central Truth:

God’s Law is a sacred covenant that guides His people in love, justice, and righteousness, strengthening faith, unity, and devotion.

BRIEF COMMENT

Exodus 19:5–6 beautifully expresses God’s covenant relationship with His people. It shows both promise and responsibility. The promise is remarkable — to become God’s “special treasure,” a “kingdom of priests,” and a “holy nation.” However, this privilege is connected to obedience.

God’s Law is not merely a list of commands. It is the foundation of a committed relationship between God and His people. Through His Law, God reveals His will, His character, and His expectations. It is not meant to burden us but to guide us into a deeper fellowship with Him.

The covenant reminds us that God desires closeness with His people. May He grant us the grace to walk faithfully in obedience to His Word.

In the previous lesson, we explored The Bible’s Purpose: God’s Plan for Humanity. This week, we focus on God’s Law as a covenant relationship.

Understanding God’s Law as a covenant is essential to Christian faith. It reveals God’s character, His expectations, and the pathway to His blessings. This covenant is not simply about rules; it is a loving agreement that calls for faithful obedience.

In the Old Testament, Israel was chosen to reflect God’s holiness before the nations through obedience to His Law. Today, under the New Covenant through Jesus Christ, the same principles guide believers in living holy and purposeful lives.

LESSON EXPOSITION

I. THE COVENANT NATURE OF GOD’S LAW

(Exodus 19:5; Leviticus 11:44)

Exodus 19:5: God’s Law is a divine guide that reflects His will. It calls His people to listen to His voice and keep His covenant.

The Law is a gift. It shows God’s people how to live in a way that honors Him and reflects His desires (cf. Matthew 5:17).

Exodus 19:6: God promises that obedient people will become a “kingdom of priests” and a “holy nation.” This shows that the Law is relational — designed to deepen fellowship with Him.

God invites His people to reflect His holiness and purpose. Believers today are also called to be chosen and holy (1 Peter 2:9).

Leviticus 11:44: God’s holiness requires purity. His Law calls for inward transformation, not mere outward compliance (1 Peter 1:15–16).

God’s Law, therefore, is not just regulation — it is covenant. It shapes our relationship with Him and calls us into holy living.

II. THE BLESSINGS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAW

(Deuteronomy 28:1–2, 15; Jeremiah 31:33–34)

Deuteronomy 28:1–2: Obedience brings blessings — peace, protection, and prosperity. When we seek God first, His favor follows (Matthew 6:33).

Deuteronomy 28:15: Disobedience has consequences. Covenant relationship carries responsibility. Our choices matter (Galatians 6:7).

Jeremiah 31:33: God remains faithful to His covenant. Even when we fail, He does not abandon His promises (2 Timothy 2:13).

Though nothing separates us from His love (Romans 8:38–39), we are still called to faithful obedience. God’s faithfulness is not permission for disobedience.

Through obedience, we experience both blessing and responsibility. When we fall short, God graciously offers restoration.
