 *INTRODUCTION*

We give God the glory for last week's lesson, where we learnt how Jesus developed His disciples. Firstly, He commissioned them for the ministry and empowered them for leadership. Just as Jesus did to the first Apostles, we are commissioned and empowered for leadership in our generation.

This week, we are considering the topic: PETER'S TRANSFORMATION:

IMPULSIVE DISCIPLE TO INFLUENTIAL LEADER. The lesson reveals how Peter was prepared and transformed from being impulsive to being influential for the gospel. Also, how the baptism and infilling of the Holy Spirit influenced him for the great exploits for which he had been prepared. May God's Word illuminate our hearts so that we may be transformed and useful for the proclamation of the gospel. Amen.

 *LESSON EXPOSITION* 

 *I. PETER'S GRADUAL TRANSFORMATION (Matt. 16:13-20; Lk. 22:31-32; Jn. 21:15-19)* 

 _And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18)._ 

a) Peter's preparation began with his call when Jesus said, Follow me, and I will make you... He immediately left his nets and followed Jesus (Mk. 1:7)

b) Matt. 16:19: This declaration suggests that Peter would be at the forefront of opening the doors of the gospel to people. This notion likely influenced Peter's submission to Jesus' leadership.

c) v. 23: Jesus sharply rebuked the voice of Satan, speaking through Peter. This aimed to ensure that His work of preparation in Peter's life wouldn't be hindered (cf. Php. 1:6).

d) Peter's encounters with Jesus left a lasting impression on him-the transfiguration on the mount (17:1-8; cf. 2 Pet. 1:16-18), the money from a fish's mouth (17:27), the events at Gethsemane (26:36-44), witnessing Jesus' numerous healings and miracles, etc.

e) Lk. 22:31-32: Peter's impulsive nature, was at different point in time rebuked by Jesus (Matt. 14:28; 17:4; 26:33; Jn. 13:6-9). This, coupled with Jesus' prayer for him, helped solidify his preparation.

f) Jn. 21:15-19: What Jesus did here obviously had significant impact on Peter and his future leadership role in Christ's ministry.

 *II. PENTECOST AND PETER'S LEADERSHIP (Jn. 21:7,15-17; Acts 2:14ff)* 

 _But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words" (Acts 2:14)._ 

a) Peter, among Jesus' closest disciples during His earthly ministry, also stands as one of the pioneer Church fathers (Matt. 17:1,1 Pet. 1:1).

b) Jn. 21:7: Jesus recognised Peter's influence among the disciples, seen when others decided to join him in returning to fishing (v. 3). This shows Peter's leadership influence over his peers.

c) vv. 15-17: Thus, Jesus reached out to Peter and restored him from straying away from the purpose for which he was called. Also, this was in preparation for the fulfilment of God's plan

d) Acts 2:14ff: After Pentecost, Peter, who had denied Jesus three times before, spoke boldly with help of the Holy Spirit, yielding remarkable results-transformation.

e) After Christ's ascension, Peter was the first to witness to the Gospel, fulfilling Jesus' declaration in Matthew 16:18.
