Lesson 40: Mordecai

Opening Prayer

Father, help me to learn valuable lessons from the life of Mordecai and apply them to my daily walk with You, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Bible Passage: Esther 3:1–5

Memory Verse: "And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise advisers and Zeresh his wife said to him, 'Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!'" — Esther 6:13

Introduction

Mordecai was a Jew from the tribe of Benjamin who lived in Shushan, the capital city of Persia (Esther 2:5-7). He was the cousin and guardian of Hadassah, also known as Esther, whom he raised as his own daughter after she became an orphan. Mordecai's life is a remarkable example of courage, wisdom, loyalty, and unwavering faith in God. His story encourages believers to stand firmly for what is right, regardless of opposition or danger.

Text Review: Esther 3:1–5

This passage reveals Mordecai's deep commitment to God and his refusal to compromise his faith. Although King Ahasuerus commanded everyone to bow before Haman, Mordecai refused because such an act conflicted with his devotion to God.

Key highlights include:

King Ahasuerus promoted Haman above all other officials.

The king's servants bowed before Haman as commanded.

Mordecai refused to bow or pay him homage.

Despite repeated pressure, Mordecai remained steadfast.

Haman became furious when he realized Mordecai would not honor him.

Lesson Outline 1: Mordecai's Character and Achievements

His Character

1. Kind-hearted and Wise

Mordecai lovingly raised Esther as his own daughter and wisely advised her not to reveal her Jewish identity while living in the palace (Esther 2:7, 10).

2. Courageous and Principled

He refused to bow to Haman, choosing faithfulness to God over obedience to a command that contradicted his beliefs (Esther 3:2-5).

3. Loyal and Resourceful

When the Jews were threatened with destruction, Mordecai acted quickly and wisely to seek deliverance for his people (Esther 4:1-4).

4. Humble

Even after receiving great honor from the king, Mordecai returned to his regular duties at the king's gate without pride or self-exaltation (Esther 6:10-12).

5. Selfless Risk-Taker

He was willing to risk his own safety to preserve the lives of the Jewish people and uphold God's principles (Esther 4:13-14).

His Achievements

He exposed a conspiracy to assassinate King Ahasuerus, demonstrating loyalty to the throne (Esther 2:21-23).

He guided and supported Esther until she became queen (Esther 2:10-11, 17).

He received royal recognition and honor for his faithfulness (Esther 6:1-11).

Through wisdom and divine guidance, he helped secure the preservation of the Jewish people (Esther Chapters 6–7).

He inherited Haman's position and estate after Haman's downfall (Esther 8:1-2).

Lesson Outline 2: Lessons from the Life of Mordecai

God expects His children to uphold righteousness even when it involves risk or opposition (Esther 3:2-5; Isaiah 1:17).

Faithfulness to God and to those entrusted to us is a quality that God rewards (1 Corinthians 4:2).

3. Be Alert and Resourceful

Quick thinking and responsible action can make a significant difference in difficult situations (Esther 2:21-23; Luke 16:10).

4. Walk in Wisdom and Courage

Following God often requires both wisdom and bravery (Esther 4:13-14; 1 Corinthians 16:13).

5. Serve Others Selflessly

Listening, giving wise counsel, and taking necessary risks for the benefit of others can lead to great rewards and blessings (Philippians 2:3-4).
