Lesson Objectives

Introduction

One of the expectations many couples have when entering marriage is the joy of raising godly children who will continue the family's legacy. In many African societies, childbearing is highly valued, and family members often anticipate the arrival of a child shortly after marriage.

However, when childbirth is delayed, couples may face pressure from relatives and society. The woman is often subjected to criticism, ridicule, and emotional pain. Family members may begin suggesting that the husband take another wife, while the wife may experience rejection and loneliness. In some cases, the husband's affection may diminish, leading to further strain in the marriage.

Such was the painful reality Hannah faced. Yet, instead of giving in to bitterness, she remained steadfast in her faith. Today's lesson highlights how God answered Hannah's prayers, how she faithfully fulfilled her vow, and how her son Samuel became a living testimony of God's faithfulness to Israel.

The Lesson Explained

A. Hannah's Response to Peninnah's Provocation

(1 Samuel 1:9–18)

Hannah's inability to bear children was a source of deep sorrow. In her culture, childlessness was often viewed as a disgrace, making her situation even more painful. Despite this challenge, her husband Elkanah loved her deeply and sought to comfort her.

Peninnah, Elkanah's other wife, had children and used every opportunity to mock and provoke Hannah because of her barrenness. Instead of offering encouragement, she intensified Hannah's pain, causing her emotional distress year after year.

The annual family pilgrimage to Shiloh became especially difficult for Hannah. Overwhelmed with grief, she would weep and often lose her appetite.

What makes Hannah remarkable is her response to these provocations. She did not retaliate with harsh words. She did not engage in constant arguments with Peninnah, blame her husband, or abandon her faith in God. Instead, she chose the path of prayer.

Year after year, Hannah faithfully went to Shiloh and poured out her heart before God. She refused to allow bitterness, jealousy, or resentment to take root in her heart. Rather than seeking revenge, she sought God's intervention.

Believers today face different forms of challenges—financial difficulties, emotional struggles, family problems, delayed expectations, and spiritual battles. Hannah's example teaches us to trust God during difficult seasons.

The Bible assures us that:

"Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all." (Psalm 34:19)

When our faith is tested through provocations or difficult circumstances, we must learn to respond with wisdom, patience, and unwavering trust in God.

B. Hannah's Relationship with God

(1 Samuel 1:19–20)

Hannah was a woman of deep faith and unwavering commitment to God. Her challenges did not weaken her relationship with Him; instead, they drew her closer to Him.

In her distress, Hannah prayed earnestly and poured out her heart before the Lord with humility and sincerity. Even when Eli the priest misunderstood her actions and wrongly assumed she was drunk, Hannah responded respectfully and calmly.

Rather than becoming offended, she explained her situation with grace. Moved by her sincerity, Eli blessed her and prayed that God would grant her request.

Hannah's life teaches us that our relationship with God should not be based on circumstances. Whether life is going well or not, we should remain faithful in prayer and trust God completely.

There are times when we face situations that seem impossible. Businesses may fail, relationships may become strained, and spiritual growth may appear stagnant. Yet Hannah's story encourages us to continue seeking God and believing in His power to intervene.

No matter what challenge you are facing today, remember that God remains faithful and is able to provide a solution in His perfect time.

C. Hannah Fulfilled Her Vow to the Lord

(1 Samuel 1:21–28)

During her prayer, Hannah made a solemn vow to God. She promised that if God gave her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord's service for the rest of his life.

God answered her prayer and blessed her with a son, whom she named Samuel. This miracle demonstrated that God hears and answers sincere prayers.

True to her word, Hannah fulfilled her vow. After Samuel was weaned, she brought him to the temple and entrusted him to the care of Eli the priest.

Her actions revealed extraordinary faith, gratitude, and obedience. She recognized Samuel as God's gift and willingly returned him to God's service.

Although she could have looked for excuses or alternative ways to fulfil her promise, Hannah remained faithful to her commitment.

The Bible teaches that vows made to God should be honoured. Ecclesiastes 5:4 reminds us that it is better not to make a vow than to make one and fail to keep it.

Hannah's story demonstrates that God's timing is always perfect. Instead of running from one solution to another, she waited patiently on God and trusted Him completely.

Believers today should learn from her example by remaining faithful, patient, and committed to fulfilling every promise made to God.

Invite at least two members to share testimonies about a season of waiting in their lives and how God helped them through it.

Pray together for individuals and families experiencing delays in marriage, childbirth, career, or other areas of life, asking God to intervene and turn their waiting into testimonies.
