BIBLE READING: 1 TIMOTHY 6:17-19 (KJV)

17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

MESSAGE

I once spent a night in the home of a very wealthy man who graciously invited me to breakfast the next morning. When I arrived at the dining table, I was amazed by the wide variety of meals available. There were so many choices that I became overwhelmed and found myself longing for the simplicity of the meals I enjoyed at home.

After spending more than eighty years on earth, I have come to understand that true happiness is often found in life's simple blessings. While there is nothing wrong with being wealthy, problems arise when material possessions become the center of one's life. When people allow wealth to complicate even the simplest aspects of living, it can rob them of joy and lead to frustration and depression.

In today's Bible reading, Apostle Paul instructed Timothy to remind the wealthy believers under his care not to become proud or place their confidence in riches. Instead, they were to become rich in good works. God does not bless people with wealth so they can show it off; He blesses them so they can faithfully manage His resources and use them for His glory.

Anyone who selfishly hoards God's blessings will never experience the fullness of joy, because Scripture teaches that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). God desires His children to abound in good works, just like the women mentioned in Luke 8:2-3 who used their resources to support Jesus and advance His ministry. Every blessing you have received from God should become a channel of blessing to others.

No matter how large a house may be, a person can only sleep in one room at a time. Likewise, no matter how wealthy someone becomes, using oil instead of water to wash one's hands would only create unnecessary problems. Life was never meant to be complicated by the pursuit of status and display. Sadly, many people lose their peace because they allow their wealth to distract them from what truly matters.

Beloved, the greatest joy wealth can bring comes when it is used for God's purposes. Feeding the hungry, supporting missionaries, helping the needy, building churches, and contributing to the advancement of God's kingdom are investments with eternal rewards. Rather than spending all your resources on luxurious possessions, seek opportunities to make a lasting impact for Christ and His kingdom.
