TOPIC: THE ATTITUDE OF THANKSGIVING

SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN

O Sunday School, on the Lord’s Day,

Father, I receive this new year with a heart of thanksgiving, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BIBLE PASSAGE: PSALM 95:1–6

[1] O come, let us sing unto the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation.

[2] Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

[3] For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

[4] In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the strength of the hills is His also.

[5] The sea is His, and He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.

[6] O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

MEMORY VERSE

INTRODUCTION

As we begin a new year, it is important to pause and count our blessings. When we remember God’s faithfulness in the past, our hope is renewed for the future (Psalm 65:11). Thanksgiving positions our hearts to receive more from God. Rather than murmuring or complaining, believers are called to cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude and praise (Psalm 107:21–22).

LESSON AIM

To encourage students to develop and maintain a consistent attitude of thanksgiving.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Acknowledge that God is the source of all good things.

b. Declare and proclaim the goodness of God.

TEXT REVIEW: PSALM 95:1–6

A. The Psalmist encourages believers to do the following (vv. 1–2):

Sing unto the LORD.

Make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation.

Come before His presence with thanksgiving.

Praise Him joyfully with psalms.

B. Reasons for these actions (vv. 3–5):

The LORD is a great God.

He is the great King above all gods.

The depths of the earth and the hills belong to Him.

He created the sea and the dry land.

C. Ways to worship God (v. 6):

Bowing down before Him.

Kneeling in reverence to the LORD our Maker.

LESSON OUTLINES

LESSON OUTLINE 1: GOD IS THE SOURCE

A. God is the source of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17; Deuteronomy 26:11).

He created all things for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11).

He provides, protects, and preserves His people (Psalm 23:1–5).

He empowers and blesses diligence (Deuteronomy 8:18; Proverbs 10:22).

His care for us is personal and unique, even when His ways are beyond our understanding or answers seem delayed (Matthew 10:29–31; Isaiah 55:8–9; Psalm 30:5b).

He makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

B. Failure to recognise God’s goodness makes one ungrateful (Psalm 8:4–6). This is why believers are instructed to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Mention additional reasons why we should thank God.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: BE THANKFUL

A. God is good at all times (Psalm 73:1; 106:1). Evil does not originate from Him, though nothing escapes His knowledge (1 Corinthians 14:33; James 1:13). God causes all things to work together for good for His children (Romans 8:28).

B. When we reflect on God’s goodness and mercy in our lives, we realise that thanksgiving should be a daily lifestyle, not an occasional act (Psalm 34:1).

C. Believers are therefore encouraged to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, giving thanks to God always and in all things (2 Samuel 22:47–50; Ephesians 5:20). This helps us rise above discouragement, doubt, envy, and self-pity, and positions us for greater hope and future blessings (Psalm 42:5).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Sing a song of thanksgiving to God.

CONCLUSION

A thankful heart attracts God’s presence and blessings. Therefore, live a life of thanksgiving.
