Message

During a church outreach at a nursing home, I once spoke with an elderly man who shared a heartbreaking story. Years earlier, his daughter had brought him there and left him on the sidewalk in his wheelchair. Unable to stand or follow her, he watched helplessly as she walked back to her car and drove away without looking back. She had told him they were going to a nice hotel, but that was the last day he ever saw her.

This painful act of abandonment deeply traumatized him, leaving emotional scars that still troubled his sleep with recurring nightmares.

Long before this, another young man endured severe trauma. Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers, thrown into a pit, and sold into slavery in Egypt (Genesis 37:12–36). Yet, in the midst of betrayal and hardship, Scripture repeatedly reminds us that “the Lord was with Joseph” (Genesis 39:2). Even in a foreign land, as Joseph chose to honor God—both in his master’s house (vv. 7–10) and later in prison—God revealed His steadfast love to him. The Lord granted Joseph favor and caused him to prosper in all he did (vv. 21, 23).

Though Joseph carried the wounds of his past, God’s faithful love enabled him to rise above his circumstances. In time, he became second-in-command to Pharaoh, established a family, and eventually reconciled with the very brothers who had wronged him (Genesis 41:41–52; 45:12–15).

People may disappoint, abandon, or hurt us, but God never will. While His healing process may look different for each person, His promise of faithful love remains the same. As we trust Him and follow His guidance, He is able to restore our hearts and lead us into healing.

Insight for Today

Joseph’s experience in Egypt closely mirrors that of Daniel in Babylon centuries later. Both men were taken from their homeland, yet God granted them favor even in difficult and unfamiliar environments. Scripture tells us, “God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel” (Daniel 1:9).

Psalm 23 reminds us that although we long for “green pastures” and “quiet waters” (vv. 2–3), our journey of faith often includes walking through “the darkest valley” and facing opposition (vv. 4–5). The stories of Joseph, Daniel, and others teach us that our faith must focus more on who we trust than where we are. God’s faithful love knows no boundaries. Even in trials, we can rest in this assurance:

“Surely your goodness and faithful love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23:6 (NLT)
