TOPIC: MAINTAINING EXCELLENCE

SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN

BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 6:1–4 (KJV)

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;

And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.

Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

INTRODUCTION

Reaching the top in any aspect of life—spiritual growth, career, ministry, or relationships—is a remarkable achievement. However, remaining at the top demands the same level of discipline, commitment, and balance that brought one there (1 Corinthians 9:24–27). Without careful attention, excellence can be lost. This lesson focuses on how believers can sustain excellence over time.

TEXT REVIEW: Daniel 6:1–4

King Darius appointed 120 princes over his kingdom and placed three presidents over them. Daniel was made the chief among the presidents. Because of the excellent spirit in Daniel, the king considered promoting him over the entire realm.

Methods of Maintaining Excellence

1. BIBLICAL SOURCE OF EXCELLENCE

A. The Bible presents excellence as a fundamental value rooted in God’s nature (Job 37:23).

i. God displayed excellence in creation—everything was orderly, purposeful, and beautiful (Genesis 1:31).

ii. As children of God, believers are called to imitate Him, including His standard of excellence (Ephesians 5:1).

B. Excellence is closely tied to wisdom and integrity (Daniel 5:14; Daniel 6:2–3).

i. Biblical characters such as Daniel and Joseph demonstrated excellence in character and work, which opened doors for divine promotion (Daniel 1:8, 20; Genesis 39:7–9).

ii. Excellence glorifies God and reveals His transforming power in the life of a believer (Daniel 5:11–12).

2. THE METHODS OF MAINTAINING EXCELLENCE

Excellence is not accidental; it is sustained through deliberate actions and godly discipline. The following principles help preserve excellence:

Remain grounded in God’s purpose to avoid pride and worldly distractions (Luke 12:16–21).

Live a prayerful life, study the Word consistently, and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit (Mark 13:33; 2 Peter 1:10).

Set healthy boundaries in work, family, ministry, and personal growth to maintain balance and prevent burnout (Ecclesiastes 3:1; 4:6).

Remember, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Cultivate healthy relationships and be generous in love and good works (1 Timothy 6:18).

Remain humble and teachable, always open to learning and correction (James 4:6; Proverbs 11:14).

Serve others selflessly, using your position to bless lives (Philippians 2:3–4).

Mentor and develop others, sharing wisdom, experience, and encouragement (2 Timothy 2:2; Matthew 20:28).

Stay diligent and vigilant, avoiding complacency and overconfidence (1 Corinthians 10:12; Proverbs 12:24).

Renew your commitment to excellence by setting new goals and pursuing growth spiritually, professionally, and personally (Philippians 3:12–14).
