THE LIVING WATER (January–December, 2026)
DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
DATE: Monday, 5th January, 2026
TOPIC: NEVER SAY, “I AM LORD OF MYSELF”
MEMORISE:
“O generation, see the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of darkness? Why do My people say, ‘We are lords; we will come no more to You’?”
— Jeremiah 2:31
BIBLE READING: JEREMIAH 2:31–32
31 “O generation, see the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of darkness? Why do My people say, ‘We are lords; we will come no more to You’?”
32 “Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.”
EXPOSITION:
God strongly rebuked His people for reaching a point where they proudly declared independence from Him. This attitude of self-sufficiency and complacency was extremely dangerous. By saying, “We are lords,” they were claiming authority over their own lives and rejecting God’s rule—an act of idolatry. They elevated themselves above God, choosing to follow their own desires rather than His direction.
The lesson here is very serious. They assumed they could thrive without God, forgetting that it was God who had guided, protected, and sustained them from the beginning. Their behavior is like that of a toddler who, while learning to walk, pulls away from the father’s supporting hand. How far can such a child go without falling? The outcome is predictable—avoidable pain and harm.
Beloved, are you living as though you no longer need God? Never fall into the trap of self-dependence. We need God at every stage of life and in every decision we make. Do not walk away from Him, and never embark on any journey without His presence. Reflect deeply on Moses’ words in Exodus 33:15–16. Without God, human effort is futile, and the consequences can be severe (Jeremiah 10:23).
PRAYER POINTS:
Lord, help me to always recognize my total dependence on You in every area of my life.
Father, deliver me from the spirit of self-sufficiency and keep my heart humble before You.
O Lord, may I never stray from Your guidance; let Your presence go with me always.
SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CACGHB 452
Meter: 7 7 9 7 7 10 & Refrain
1.
Just as God who reigns on high
Spake to men in days gone by,
So the Lord is calling men today;
And, my brother, this is true,
Whatsoe’er He says to you,
There is but one thing to do—just obey.
Chorus:
Just obey, just obey,
Is the way, God’s way;
When His message comes to you,
There is but one thing to do,
Just obey, just obey.
2.
If you’re in the Saviour’s hand,
You must do as He commands,
For there is no other gospel way;
Never put the message by,
Never stop to reason why,
When the Saviour speaks to you, just obey.
3.
If for mansions fair you sigh,
In that land beyond the sky,
After time with you has passed away;
Though the way you may not see,
Christ is calling, “Follow Me,”
Faith and duty both will cry—just obey.
Amen.
