LESSON INTRODUCTION

We are warned to beware of negative influences because they can corrupt our lives. God commands us to stay away from ungodly people because they neither know Him nor live by His Word, but have idols in their hearts (2 Corinthians 6:16–18). Ungodly people do not seek God and are often proud (Psalm 10:4). They live according to the flesh and are not yielded to the Spirit of God (Romans 8:7), practicing the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19–21) which oppose the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23).

Jesus taught that a person can be recognized by the fruit of their actions. This lesson focuses on the power of negative influence and how believers can avoid it.

LESSON AIM

To help members understand that fellowship with unbelievers can negatively influence a believer’s life.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, members should:

Understand that bad company corrupts good character.

Know that avoiding bad company helps a believer remain undefiled.

Avoid joining with unbelievers, unrighteous, and wicked people as they can corrupt you.

LESSON OUTLINE

1. POWER OF NEGATIVE INFLUENCE

2 Samuel 13:1–5 – The case of Jonadab’s negative influence on Amnon.

The power of negative influence lies in the schemes and vices of ungodly people. In this account, Jonadab helped Amnon act on his lustful desire for his sister.

Key points:

Evil Desire – Amnon’s lust led him to consult Jonadab, whose ungodly advice enabled Amnon to sin (2 Samuel 13:2; James 1:14).

Lies – Jonadab instructed Amnon to feign illness to lure his sister to him, demonstrating that lying is a tool of negative influence (Psalm 52:3).

Deceit – Amnon deceived his father under Jonadab’s guidance to satisfy his evil desire (Proverbs 12:20; 2 Samuel 13:5,10–14).

Lesson: Negative influence can transform evil desires into sinful actions that lead to destruction.

2. HOW TO AVOID NEGATIVE INFLUENCE

To guard yourself from corruption:

Renew your mind with God’s Word – meditate day and night (Romans 12:2; Psalm 1:2; Joshua 1:8).

Keep your thoughts pure and obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4; Philippians 4:8).

Avoid the ungodly and do not seek their counsel (Psalm 1:1; Ephesians 5:11).

Abstain from all appearances of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22).

Guard against negative thoughts, which attract ungodly influence and lead to sin (Matthew 15:19–20).

SUMMARY

Negative influence can lead to sinful actions and even destruction. Believers must separate themselves from ungodly people to avoid corruption and remain faithful to God.

Father, thank You for teaching us to beware of and avoid negative influences.

Father, grant us the grace to meditate on Your Word day and night.
