LESSON OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

Explain the work of the Holy Spirit as an Advocate in the life of believers.

Identify at least two attributes of the Holy Spirit that should be evident in the life of every believer.

INTRODUCTION

How can we be confident that we truly belong to God as His sons and daughters? This is a deeply spiritual question that can only be answered through divine revelation. Consider this thought:

Physical things are easy to prove because they are visible and objective.

But how do we give evidence of an inward experience—

A spiritual encounter that is unseen and deeply personal?

God has provided the answer. The assurance comes from within. The Holy Spirit bears witness in the heart of every believer. Through His inner testimony, believers know without doubt that they are children of God.

Today’s lesson explains how believers become children of God and highlights the vital role of the Holy Spirit in affirming this relationship.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. We Are God’s Children Through the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:12–16

The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, and the Advocate (John 16:7–14). God revealed Himself as Father, sent His Son Jesus Christ, and continues His work through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is therefore co-equal with the Father and the Son, forming the foundation of the doctrine of the Trinity (Hebrews 1:1–7).

Although the personality and operations of the Holy Spirit remain a divine mystery beyond full human understanding, Scripture clearly affirms His active presence in the life of believers. Jesus assured His disciples that the Holy Spirit would serve as a Witness and Helper (John 14:16–18, 26).

Through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, believers receive continuous assurance of their relationship with God. Salvation grants believers the privilege of adoption, making them sons and daughters of God with full inheritance rights. This new birth establishes an intimate relationship with God the Father and Jesus Christ, confirmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Every believer receives the Holy Spirit as a gift from God and must consciously yield to His guidance into all truth.

B. The Holy Spirit Helps Us in Our Weaknesses

Romans 8:26–27

Human weakness makes it impossible for believers to overcome sin, the flesh, and the schemes of Satan by their own strength. Left to themselves, believers are powerless. However, the Holy Spirit strengthens believers and enables them to overcome their natural limitations.

One clear evidence of human weakness is the inability to pray effectively. Many believers struggle to pray according to God’s will, timing, and purpose. The Holy Spirit steps in to help, guiding believers on what to pray for and how to pray. He intercedes on their behalf with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

Because the Holy Spirit knows the mind of God, His intercession is always accurate and effective. He empowers believers to live disciplined prayer lives and provides strength for daily Christian living. Dependence on human wisdom and ability is dangerous, but reliance on the Holy Spirit produces victory. The great heroes of faith succeeded because they depended on the Spirit’s power—and believers today can do the same.
