LETTING GO OF WORRY

Devotional Passage: Ephesians 1:3-10.

Lesson Scripture: Matthew 6:24-34

GOLDEN TEXT

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

I. Discuss numerous ways God can meet the needs of His children.

II. Trust God to such an extent that they are released from their worries.

III. Give thanks for God's provision and help those in the community who lack basic needs.

INTRODUCTION

One of our daily devotionals of many years has this quote: "I received a voice in the evening softly saying, 'Bear not your yesterdays into tomorrow. Nor burden this week with last week's load of sorrow. Let all your burdens be cared for by the Lord, not by your effort. Learn to trust God's Word each day for your sustenance. One step and then another, take your way; Live day by day!" Worry is the human natural response to uncertainty. When people face life questions they do not have answers to, they tend to become anxious. When people have problems they do not know how to solve, they

tend to resort to worry. It seems natural for anyone to worry. But allowing unnecessary anxiety to preoccupy your life is a gradual entrance into emptiness and chasing after shadow. The truth is that life is more important than physical things. Therefore, the antidote for worry is for each believer to live with the determination to fulfil God's destiny for them. Today's teaching focuses on letting go of worry and teaching believers how to live every day trusting God for their needs and the needs of those around them.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Be Anxious for Nothing. Matthew 6:24-31

Jesus started this teaching by challenging His followers to pick a clear position on who their master would be. He made it clear that it is not possible to serve two masters at the same time - God and mammon. It will lead to conflict and confusion. When you choose God as your Master, you do not have to bother about physical things because God can meet all your needs. God has a plan on how to sustain all He created. In Jesus's explanation, He said that God has built into His creation how all things would be cared for. To illustrate God's providential care, Jesus pointed His audience to the birds of the sky and the lilies. These two creatures do not sow yet benefit from God's benevolent provisions and care. The lilies are fed and nourished by rain and dew. The birds of the skies are provided for through the leftover harvests in fields they do not labour for. Both the lilies and birds live by depending on God's provision. The lilies and birds are less valuable than man in God's agenda, and they do not lack. They do not fret and worry, yet they have God's wealth in ways that man cannot understand. Jesus encourages us to trust in the abiding love and care of the Father, who provides for and cares for us.

Worry and anxiety result from a lack of faith or misplaced priorities. Trusting in the potency of power, influence, and wealth as solutions to human challenges has always led to disappointment. Any time we depend on money, it always fails, but when we rely on God, we can be assured because God never fails. The ideal attitude of a believer is to consider himself as one whom God has a responsibility or obligation to take care of. This is the meaning of 'casting all your burden upon Jesus.' There will always be reasons to worry, but the truth is that no amount of worry can solve man's problems. The practical counsel for us as God's children is to stop worrying and start trusting.

B. Seek First. Matthew 6:32-34

The kingdom of God should be the priority for all humans. Matthew 6:32 means if you set the things of the kingdom as your topmost priority, God will bless your efforts and provide all your needs here on earth, and you can also be sure of your reward in heaven. The idea of seeking is not the practice of a religious obligation to please God. But make a conscious effort to overcome the care of the world so that they do not shift your focus from God. To enjoy God's providential blessing, you must seek first His kingdom and its righteousness. The first thing that makes a man qualify in the kingdom of God is salvation through Christ Jesus, without which there will be no right or benefit to kingdom riches. This does not mean that you should neglect reasonable and daily duties that can help you sustain your life. If you take care of God's business as a priority, God will take care of your business as He

promised. If we truly believe this arrangement, why then do we worry? Seeking God's kingdom rather than money or worldly treasures will help you benefit more from God's blessing.
