SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON (NBC)

PREVIEW FOR DECEMBER

We want to appreciate God for giving us the privilege of learning at the feet of the Master for a whole year. We are confident that, like other months, this last month would be a blessing to you. 

The theme for this month is "Our Holy God and the Holy Scripture." Under this theme, you will learn more about:

• The Holy Scripture: We will know about the Bible, how it came to be, and why we have the Holy Scriptures.

• Our Heavenly Father: We will learn what our Heavenly Father requires of us. Safe and Secure in Christ: We will learn about our true security through the blood that saved us.

The Holy Spirit. We will learn about the Holy Spirit, our Teacher and Advocate. approach, which the pastor guides for two Sundays.

The following are suggested teaching methods you can adopt. They can be used to open the lesson or teach the body of the lesson. We recommend that teaching methodology be used throughout the month. The recommendation is that the pastor or someone who has an in-depth idea about the subject is the one to prepare selected teachers. A general assembly is recommended for two Sundays, and the inductive teaching

December 7: Inductive Teaching: The pastor should train four regular teachers with the lesson ahead, using questions he had prepared from the lesson. Each trained teacher should moderate the questions; they will ask the question while members respond. The pastor is to round off the section and address any unresolved questions.

December 14: Teaching: The pastor should lead the members in a general assembly.

December 21: Teaching: The pastor is to lead the members in a general assembly.

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES

Devotional Reading: Psalm 119:105-112

Lesson Scripture: Psalm 19.7-13,2 Timothy 3:14-17*

GOLDEN TEXT

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

I. Discuss how the Word of God came to be. 

II. Recite today's golden text and personalise it. 

III. Mention three ways the psalmist described the Holy Scriptures.

INTRODUCTION

A young man called Gad grew up in a village in the early 1960s. He enrolled in a literacy programme organised by his church. The teacher was a member of his parents' church, and the textbook that was used for the lesson was a primal Yoruba "ABD" that was written for beginners who want to learn Yoruba. The focus of this formal school was both religious and literacy learning. Thus, the focus was not only on learning to read but it was also on moral upbringing. The curriculum also included learning about the books of the Bible, followed by learning how to read the book of Psalms from the Yoruba Bible. This was the academic experience of this young man, who later gave his life to Jesus and was called to the gospel ministry. The teacher's sincerity, the student's commitment, and the fear of God instilled in him by his parents helped him tremendously. Like evening lessons, Bible- based training in formal mentoring also played a significant role in Gad's life. Similarly, Paul, in his second letter to Timothy, highlights the usefulness of Scripture for lifelong training and walking with God.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Instruction to Remain in the Holy Scriptures Psalm 19:7-13; 2 Timothy 3:14-15

Sometimes, people struggle to believe the truth, especially when they cannot verify the sources. One primary reason people would readily accept the truth is that they are sure the source is reliable. The psalmist revealed some basic truths about the Scriptures, and we will be considering some of these truths. He described the Scripture as perfect and able to refresh the soul of a man. He also declared that the law of the Lord can be trusted to give wisdom to those who need it. This means that by following the precept of God, you will experience freshness and divine wisdom (Psalm 19:7). Through the Bible, we come to understand God's teachings and commands. This has helped many who find comfort in His teachings to gain knowledge and have joy (v. 8). Any time God gives instruction, it is always fair. God's instructions are more precious than gold, and they are also sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:9-10). Through God's instruction, His servants receive warnings, and once they keep these instructions, they have access to the reward that follows. God's Word is also powerful enough to save the righteous from wilful sin and deliver them from bondage (Psalm 19:11-13).

Having got the revelation in God's Word, Paul specifically encouraged Timothy to remain steadfast and keep growing in what he had learnt from him and his parents. Remaining in the Holy Scriptures means continuing and staying in what you have learnt from the Bible. It means to be true to its scriptural foundation and spiritual formation. To continue in the knowledge of the Bible includes following God's plan for your life, actively reading, meditating, and studying the Word, following the commands God puts in your heart as you ponder the Scriptures, and associating with a godly community who constantly help you obey the truth.

Believers must heed the warning from the Scriptures, obey the instructions of the Bible, follow its teachings, and never overlook whatever it says. Heeding the warnings from God's Word would prevent you from error. Being obedient to the written Word is obeying God who sent it, and following its instructions would lead to becoming like Jesus because He is the perfect example of God. Paying attention to studying God's Word is profitable for everyday life.

*B. Encouragement to Remain in the Holy Scriptures. 2 Timothy 3:16-17*

Paul emphasised his instruction to Timothy by giving him reasons why he should remain true to his faith. He must recognise that the Scripture is inspired by God and aims to teach, reproof, correct, and instruct in righteousness. The writers of each book of the Bible were men selected by God as instruments under His power (2 Peter 1:20). Their natural elements, such as cultural inclinations, were not eliminated. However, God used circumstances that surrounded them to shape them so that the message they received from Him could meet a particular need and speak to several generations. These men were prepared by the power of God so that the situations and uniqueness car would bring out the miracle of the Bible. The credibility of God's message spoken through a godly teacher reinforces that you must continue to be established in the knowledge of the Bible. The Bible is a unique book. Its knowledge brings salvation to those who place their faith in Christ Jesus.

Living by the warning of the Bible helps one escape from error and be equipped for every good work. One way to benefit from these is to be impacted early with the knowledge of the Bible by godly elders-parents, teachers, or mentors. Exposure to the Bible and commitment to live by its principles early in life have many advantages. It will make you wise. You will also avoid many temptations and position yourself to be who God wants you to be, an actual image of God.

Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity:*  Lead class members to form a Bible reading group to share God's Word and give a weekly/monthly report to the group leader.
