EZEKIEL'S VISION OF HOPE

Devotional Reading: Revelation 7:9-17

GOLDEN TEXT

Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing. Ezekiel 47:12

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

I. Identify the significance of the water of life in the restoration process of Israel's hopes.

II. Identify how they can also enjoy the benefits of the water of life.

III. Reflect on how their lives will become a spring of water to a thirsty soul close to them.

INTRODUCTION

God used the imagery of flowing water to convey the grace that His people would experience due to a restored relationship. He used the idea of the flowing river to depict salvation, which the Lord would cause to flow to His congregation when the kingdom of God shall be perfected. It is this picture of messianic salvation that shapes the magnificent vision of Ezekiel in our lesson today. The waters that flow from the sanctuary represent the life-giving power that proceeds from the throne of God and flows to the Dead Sea. There were trees with edible fruits at the river bank, and the river had many fish. The tree with its fruits and fish describes the blessings that the water brought to God's people. The main features in the whole passage are the re-establishment of Israel, but on new grounds and blessing, similar to that of paradise. There is a powerful and abiding source of blessing that greatly surmounts evil. This is the hope promised to every believer in Christ Jesus. As we study from our text today, we will receive hope for our lives, families, businesses, and country at large.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Spiritual Connotation of Water of Life. Ezekiel 47:1-5

The Israelites were far from home because they were exiled. Each year, their hopes of returning diminished. However, God showed Ezekiel a vision of the land of Israel. The vision of hope for the release of the captives is documented in Ezekiel 40-48. The vision captured the perfect temple in the New Jerusalem, the return of God's glory, and the people's renewed worship. Through the prophet, God was reminding His people that their experience in exile was not the end of their journey. In the vision described in Ezekiel 47, Ezekiel saw water coming from the temple in Israel. As he walked with the man in the vision, the volume of the water kept increasing until it became a river that he could not cross. A flowing water from the temple signifies that the source of the restoration would come from the house of the Lord. The water has swarms of living creatures, and the riverbank has trees whose leaves bring healing. Ezekiel's vision shows that God will restore His people, heal them, and provide their source of life and food. This is because God is gracious. God is still in the business of restoration. No matter how challenging the situation is, if God steps in, there will be a solution. He still heals today, and He provides for the needs of His people.

2. Mention two benefits that believers can derive from the water of life.

B. The Renewed Hope. Ezekiel 47:6-9

The man who measured the water asked the prophet if he observed where the water flowed from. The flow is a small spring, till it gradually becomes a river and eventually an ocean. God's way of dealing with His people may be seen as insignificant initially, but it does not mean that God is limited in power. The water flowed towards the Dead Sea, a symbol of lifelessness, and everything dead in the sea was brought back to life. It is just like hope was brought into a seemingly hopeless situation.

The water that started small at the beginning gradually increased. No one should despise the days of small beginnings, because there is hope for an increase. Believers should never forget that God can raise them no matter how little they start. When we allow Christ into our lives, we will be amazed at what we can do. Nothing and no one is too small for God to use. The moment we release our lives to Him, He will ensure that we never remain the same.

C. Fruitful and Prosperous Life. Ezekiel 47:12

The water from the river brings life into dryness. Because it never dries, it sustains the swarming animals in the river. The fruits serve as food for human beings and animals, while the leaves of the 1-5 tree used for healing reveal God's desire to heal His people. The water and the trees are symbols of in fruitfulness that God intended for His people. Although one does not know the names of those the the their trees, they bear different fruits, which may indicate the complete supply of all nutrients that humans need. There is an abundance of grace from God, which is depicted with the flowing water and trees beside it with leaves and fruits. God wants His people to live a prosperous and healthy life. Thus, He supplies all that they need to remain healthy and live in abundance.

God is the source of fruitfulness and a prosperous life. He desires that you enjoy good health and prosperity. No one can be said to be truly successful if God is not in it. The power to succeed in life comes from God. Do not look for diabolical powers for success because such success does not last. Trust in God and wait for His promises; He will bring to fulfilment all He has promised at the appointed time.
