THE STORY OF EZEKIEL

Devotional Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:2-6,

Lesson Scripture: Ezekiel 3:10-11;24:15-24,27*

GOLDEN TEXT: And He said to me, Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you. Ezekiel 3:10.

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

I. Compare the life of the prophet Ezekiel to today's prophets,

II. Mention one of the reasons the people of Judah refused to heed God's warning.

III. Express their willingness to obey God and follow His instructions.

INTRODUCTION

The prophet Ezekiel lived in exile in Babylon during the period before and after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. His message was addressed to the exiles in Babylonia and the people of Jerusalem. The book of Ezekiel has six principal parts: 

(1) God's call to Ezekiel to be a prophet; 

(2) Warning to the people about God's judgement on them and the coming fall and destruction of Jerusalem; 

(3) Messages from the Lord regarding His judgement upon the various nations that oppressed and misled His people; 

(4) Comfort for Israel after the fall of Jerusalem and the promise of a brighter future; 

(5) The prophecy against Gog; 

(6) Ezekiel's picture of a restored temple and nation. 

Ezekiel was a man of deep faith and great imagination. His insights came in the form of visions, and his messages were expressed in vivid symbolic actions. Ezekiel emphasised the need for renewal of the heart and spirit and the responsibility of each individual for their sins. He also proclaimed his hope for the renewal of the nation. As a priest and a prophet, he was interested in the temple and the need for holiness. Today's lesson will expose us more to the life of Prophet Ezekiel.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. God's Message and Commissioning of Ezekiel. Ezekiel 3:10-11

God has been talking with Prophet Ezekiel from the earlier verses. In this conversation, God was giving Prophet Ezekiel assurance that He was the One sending him to the house of Israel. In verse 10, God instructed him to keep all His instructions in his heart and be ready to say exactly the words He would give him. God commissioned Prophet Ezekiel in verse 11 to go to the Jews in the land of Chaldea and declare His words. God told him not to bother about the people's reaction when delivering the message, but he must ensure that God's Word is spoken with precision.

As Christians, we must declare God's Word to our world at all costs. Some people may not listen; they may even make jest of us, but we should not be discouraged. Before we go out to preach, we must receive strength from God for the task through constant fellowship, prayer, and Bible study. The promise of God for us is that as we are sharing the gospel with the world, He is with us even to the end of the age (Matthew 18:19-20).

1. Discuss why God instructed Ezekiel not to forget all Me told him.

2. Why Is God not bothered again about whether the people listen to Ezekiel?

B. Signs of the Destruction of Jerusalem. Ezekiel 24:15-24,27

The old-time prophets were always at the receiving end. They were the channel through which God communicated His message to the people. At times, for clarity and a better understanding of the message, the prophets were the ones God used as examples. God using Ezekiel as a specimen to convey His judgment to the people of Judah was tough on him. God instructed Ezekiel to tell the house of Israel a parable about what will happen to them. Immediately after God gave him this revelation, He also announced to him the impending death of his wife, together with the significance the event would have on the people generally. "Son of man, with one blow, I am about to take the delight of your eyes" (Ezekiel 24:16). On the occurrence of his wife's death, he was not allowed to lament or show any sign of grief. He could only sigh in silence. The prophet told the people the parable in the morning, and then in the evening, his wife died, just as God had told him. The following morning, according to the command of God, he showed no grief, and in answer to the people's inquiry, he explained to them the meaning of what happened. As his dearest wife was taken from him, so would Israel's dearest object, the holy temple, be taken by destruction, and their children by the sword. His actions were supposed to guide Israel's reaction.

The temple was called the 'pride of your strength' because Israel based her might and strength upon it as a symbol of God's presence. However, their behaviour was contrary to God's instructions, and God was ready to punish them for their sin. Contrary to their belief that God cannot destroy the city because God's temple was in Jerusalem, God was prepared to bring the city to ruin.

A believer's life is not to be lived for personal interest. He is not only a model for unbelievers, but his life is also an embodiment of God's presence. Believers, especially ministers of God, cannot afford to live contrary to God's injunction because they may mislead unbelievers and some weak Christians who are watching them. Every preacher must align his life to the message on his lips and trust God for strength when it seems difficult.

1. How would you feel if God used you like Ezekiel as an example for people?

2. Mention some of the things Christians do in our churches today that may bring God's punishment upon them.

C. The Prophet of God as a Sign. Ezekiel 24:27*

Prophet Ezekiel remained silent until the significant prophecies about Jerusalem were fulfilled. At the fulfilment of the prophecies, he had an opportunity to communicate freely with his people, unlike when God instructed him to remain silent. From that moment, Ezekiel sent his prophecies to neighbouring nations, especially Babylonia.

There is time for everything. God may instruct His children not to speak concerning a matter. It calls for discipline to know when to speak and when to be silent. Believers must ask for the grace to be sensitive so that they do not speak when God wants them to remain silent.

1. If you were Ezekiel and you were instructed not to speak over a vital issue that has to do with the lives of some people, what would be your reaction? 

2. Should you speak over every matter in your church council meeting? Discuss

Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity

Lead the class members to discuss God's action with the old-time prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Is there a contradiction to what we know today as prophetic ministry?
