TOPIC: THE DISCERNING EAR

But he said: “It is not the noise of the shout of victory, nor the noise of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing I hear.” (Exodus 32:18).

[15]. And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.

[16]. Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.

[17]. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”

18 But he said: “It is not the noise of the shout of victory, nor the noise of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing I hear.”

EXPOSITION

The ear is important in the body, and if it doesn't work right, it can make one partly, or completely deaf. In a conversation between Moses and Joshua, Joshua thought I heard war, but Moses recognised it as music. This was confimed when they saw the calf and dancing (Exodus 32:19). It shows that music is enjoyable, while noise is not. As Moses' associate and someone watched by God, Joshua needed to learn discernment to lead God's people well.

The gift of discernment is often overlooked, but it is essential for leading God's people correctly. Apostle Paul proved this in Acts 16:17, when he rebuked the demon in a slave girl. The confirmation that the apostles are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim the way of salvation, doesn't seem harmful, but it takes an accurately discerning man to know that the spirit is not of God, but for profit-making (Acts 16:19). There is a difference between hearing and listening. A functional ear can hear words, but an attentive heart is needed to listen. Only one who listens attentively can discern correctly as today commemorates World Radio Day.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, open my inner ears to hear and discern rightly.

2. Father, give me discernment to defeat the devil's schemes.

3. Lord, give our leaders the ability to recognise and stop the devil's deception.
