TOPIC: PLEASING GOD (I)

MEMORISE

And He Who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him (John 8:29).

READ: John 8:20-29

[20]. These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

[21]. Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”

[22]. So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

[23]. And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

[24]. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

[25]. Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” And Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.

[26]. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.”

[27]. They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.

[28]. Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.

[29]. And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”

EXPOSITION

As stewards and disciples, the quest to please both our Master and others is often a dilemma. While striving to please men, we may carelessly stray from God's perfect will. However, our ultimate aim should be to please our Heavenly Father. Just as Jesus faced the choice between pleasing people, or God, we too encounter similar decisions. Yet, Jesus plainly chose to please God above all else, aligning Himself with the Father's will despite opposition. His unwavering commitment to God's purpose serves as a poignant example for us today and beyond.

In times of trial, we should follow His example in surrendering to God's will at Gethsemane: "Your will be done." Pleasing God means prioritising His plan over our own desires or others'. It involves choosing to selflessly align with God's purposes, putting aside self-gratification and fear of what others think. When we make pleasing God our main goal, we find genuine freedom and fulfilment in our faith journey.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord Jesus, empower me to please You wholeheartedly in all things.

2. Lord, grant me the wisdom and strength to consistently choose Your will over worldly desires, or expectations.

3. May the Church remain steadfast in seeking and fulfilling Your will above all else, Oh Lord.
